The city’s museums offer a fascinating insight into Borneo’s history, whilst the central handicraft market is the perfect spot to pick up a souvenir or two. In the evening the city comes to life in the famous night market where hawker stalls serve an array of mouth-watering street-food.
KK’s main attraction however is its proximity to beautiful beaches. A short boat ride from the coast, the Tunku Abdul Rahman Marine Park has five tropical islands where visitors can enjoy swimming in turquoise waters and snorkelling amongst exotic, colourful fish.
If you like a challenge, why not tackle the 2-day ascent up Mount Kinabalu – Malaysia’s highest peak. Although the summit is over 4,000 metres high, only a reasonable level of fitness is required to reach the top. Leave early so you can arrive in time to watch the sun rise over the jungle. The Mount Kinabalu National Park is home to more than 5,000 species of plants, and over 400 species of birds and mammals. This immense national park with its tropical lowlands and alpine meadows is a must for walkers, wildlife and botany enthusiasts.
