First opened in 1988, the Amanpuri – Sanskrit for ‘peaceful place’ – has stone steps leading down to the soft sands of Pansea Beach, where kayaks, paddleboards and the mesmerising Andaman Sea await. Its Thai-style pavilions and luxurious villas are dispersed among the coconut palms, their tall triangular roofs peeping through the swaying canopy. Some have infinity plunge pools, while others come with spacious salas for capturing the magical sunsets. The Ayutthaya-inspired architecture is redolent of ancient Thailand.

Apart from a gorgeous private beach, Amanpuri spoils its guests with floodlit tennis courts, plentiful water sports and a spa that specialises in individual wellness immersion programmes.
