ILLUSTRIOUS HISTORY
Known in its heyday as Chang’an, the illustrious history of Xi’an can be traced back over 3,000 years. Serving as the capital for numerous dynasties and ruled by over 70 emperors, Xi’an is the cornerstone of Chinese civilisation and is replete with ruins and relics.
The heart of the Chinese Empire for many centuries, Xi’an and its surrounding countryside are scattered with fascinating archaeological treasures, the most famous being the Terracotta Army. Discovered by chance in 1974 and spread across three excavated pits, these life-like terracotta sculptures number in the thousands and depict the armies of the First Emperor of China (Qin Shi Huang).
The Terracotta Warriors may be the star attraction, but Xi’an’s large Muslim quarter is a real gem. Located amidst tranquil gardens and courtyards, this vibrant quarter is home to the spectacular Great Mosque which beautifully blends both Arabic and Chinese architectural styles.
Whilst here we also recommend cycling around the magnificent fortified walls of the Old City (which dates back to the Ming dynasty) – an enjoyable experience and unique way to see Xi’an.
Set aside time to discover the city’s numerous ancient pagodas, including the Giant Wild Goose Pagoda in southern Xi’an. This seven-storey Buddhist pagoda was originally constructed during the Tang dynasty but has been rebuilt and renovated many times over the years.
