Bhutan Mountain Resort, Bumthang

Ideally placed near the Wangduechhoeling Palace, this family-run resort in Bhutan’s highlands has deep-rooted traditions of hospitality.

With a backdrop of ancient cloud forest, the Bhutan Mountain Resort is an idyllic retreat in the heart of the Jakar Valley. A vision of hand-cut river rocks and sturdy Himalayan Blue Pine, it’s the perfect base for exploring the area’s temples, monasteries and lush landscapes. The charming, ever-smiling staff and family are known for their incredibly warm service and hospitality.

The generously sized rooms are designed to be peaceful sanctuaries after a day of exploring, complete with plush mattresses, high thread count linens and natural wood panelling infused with essential oils. Bathrooms come with large soaking tubs and rain showers, but for some extra pampering you can always head to the spa for a traditional massage or hot stone bath. The resort has a hall for self-guided yoga and meditation.

Ashi, the matriarch of the family, runs the kitchen where hearty regional dishes are crafted out of farm-sourced local cheese, seasonal fruits and vegetables, lean meat and freshwater fish. Some highlights include the buckwheat pancakes slathered in hand-gathered Bumthang honey and the fibre-rich noodles of the Jakar Valley.
