MOST RENOWNED TIGER RESERVE
Sprawling for nearly 2,000 sq km across the districts of Mandla and Balaghat, Kanha is one of the country’s most renowned tiger reserves. It was declared a member of Project Tiger in 1974, and offers spectacular sightings of these majestic creatures roaming freely in their natural habitat. As well as being ideal tiger country, the reserve’s sal and bamboo forests also support leopard, hyena, wild pig, langurs, gaur and plenty of antelope and deer – including the rare barasingha (swamp deer).
Avid birdwatchers will also find many reasons to feature Kanha on a luxury, tailor-made journey to India, with hundreds of different bird species recorded here. These include bee-eaters, crested serpent eagles, grey hornbills, woodpeckers, Indian peafowl, white-breasted kingfishers and much more. The park is very well maintained and a joy to explore, blessed with a diverse topography of grassy meadows, sweeping valleys, clear streams and vast plateaus. Safaris in open-topped jeeps are the main activity here, but nature walks alongside trained forest guides can also be arranged.
