As one of Central India’s lesser known reserves, Pench offers a more intimate safari experience than nearby Kanha or Bandhavgarh. The reserve is a member of Project Tiger and, as the name suggests, is a crucial habitat for these endangered species, as well as boasting one of the highest densities of prey in the country.

Named after the meandering Pench River, which flows through the reserve from north to south, Pench has a wonderful landscape of dry teak forests, rolling hills, valleys and waterfalls. This scenic setting is said to have been the inspiration for Kipling’s famous work The Jungle Book. Today you can enjoy game drives as well as elephant safaris through this enchanting forest as you watch for tigers, hyenas, jackals, barking deer, wild boar and jungle cats. Keen birders can keep an eye out for hundreds of resident and migratory species, including pochards, osprey and the grey-headed fishing eagle.
