Depart London Heathrow in the evening on your direct SriLankan Airlines flight to Colombo.

Arrive in Colombo, where you will be met and transferred by private vehicle to the Cultural Triangle. Stay at Vil Uyana, close to Sigiriya and well placed for exploring the region’s principal cultural sites and national parks.

The following morning, visit Sigiriya Rock Fortress, the 5th-century citadel built by King Kashyapa. The climb to the summit involves around 1,200 steps, although it can be taken at your own pace and there is the option to climb only part of the way. An early start is recommended, before returning to the hotel for breakfast.

The next day, visit Polonnaruwa, Sri Lanka’s second ancient capital and now a World Heritage site. There is also the option to stop locally for a traditional rice and curry lunch.

Stay: 3 nights at Vil Uyana.

Travel to Kandy, stopping en route at the Dambulla Cave Temples. This important World Heritage site comprises five caves decorated with extensive wall and ceiling paintings, together with more than 150 Buddha images.

Continue to Jetwing Kandy Gallery, set just outside the city in the village of Gurudeniya. The following day, explore Kandy with your chauffeur-guide, including the Temple of the Tooth and Peradeniya Botanical Gardens. There is also the option to attend a cultural performance in the evening and visit Kandy market.

Transfer to Peradeniya Railway Station for the train journey to Ella, subject to ticket availability. Preferred seats will be requested, although if suitable tickets are unavailable the journey will instead be made by road.

On arrival, transfer to 98 Acres Resort and Spa, set on a tea estate near Ella. The next two days are at leisure, with your chauffeur-guide available locally. Possible visits include Finlay’s Tea Factory, Little Adam’s Peak, Ella Rock and Ravana Ella Falls.

Travel south to Galle and visit Galle Fort, the historic walled town developed by the Dutch from 1663. Explore its churches, temple, mosque, museums, narrow lanes and ramparts before continuing along the coast to Tangalle.

Stay at Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort, set within a coconut plantation on the southern coastline. The following two days are at leisure. Optional resort activities include spa treatments, exploring locally by bicycle or tuk-tuk, high tea and a Sri Lankan cooking class.
