ABOUT THE ITINERARY

Starting in Anchorage, you’ll explore some of North America’s most pristine wilderness areas, taking in the epic Denali National Park, the towering peak of Mount McKinley and the strikingly beautiful scenery of the UNESCO-sponsored Kluane National Park. You’ll get unique glimpses into the days of the old Gold Rush in quaint historical towns, and encounter some of the regions captivating wildlife species, including bears, moose, dall sheep, caribou and a variety of birds.

You’ll also take epic road journeys along legendary highways through jaw-dropping panoramic landscapes. You’ll be treated to an endless supply of photo opportunities, featuring huge blue lakes, thundering rivers, waterfalls and dramatic calving glaciers that all add to the unforgettable alpine scenery. The tour ends where it begins, in Anchorage, the largest city and cosmopolitan centre of Alaska.

Day 1

ANCHORAGE

Begin your journey by boarding your flight to Anchorage. You will be welcomed at the airport by your tour guide, and taken to your hotel to meet and get acquainted with your fellow travellers.

Day 2-3

DENALI NATIONAL PARK

This morning you will bid goodbye to Anchorage and travel via the George Parks Highway towards Denali National Park. As well as stunning natural landscapes – consisting of glaciers, rivers, deep valleys and snowy peaks – the park is rich in wildlife. A shuttle bus will take you deep into the park in search of wolves, dall sheep, moose, caribou and grizzly bears, who are frequently drawn to the glistening waters of the vast Wonder Lake. There’s also a wonderful opportunity for a glacier flight to Mt McKinley – the highest mountain in the U.S.A.

Day 4

FAIRBANKS

Today your group will head back onto the George Parks Highway to Fairbanks, stopping en route to visit the Alaska Railroad Museum. In Fairbanks, located about 320 km south of the Arctic Circle, there are many activities to keep you busy. We recommend the sternwheeler cruise on the Chena River, but you can also experience the Gold Rush Show at Malamute Saloon. Don’t miss out on the Alaska Dog Mushing Museum, or trying some local delicacies at the restaurants – the king crabs are a must.

Day 5-7

DAWSON CITY

You will enjoy a stroll through downtown Fairbanks before heading south to the Delta Junction, eventually joining the aptly named Top of the World Highway. The journey will be full of photographic opportunities as you pass by countless lakes, meandering rivers and beautiful tundra scenery.

Dawson City is a charming historical town with beautifully restored buildings and its very own mountain – Midnight Dome. You’ll visit the mountain, as well as Bonanza Creek, Jack London Cabin and the fascinating Gold Diggers Museum. People still dig for gold in here, and you can try your luck panning for gold yourself. The following day will include a drive up the Dempster Highway to the remote town of Inuvik – home to the jagged Tombstone Mountains.

Day 8-9

WHITEHORSE

Your group tour continues onwards to Whitehorse via the Klondike Highway, watching as the mighty Yukon River comes in and out of view. You’ll stop to view the infamous Five Finger Rapids and numerous old post offices, tiny villages and road houses that echo the Gold Rush era of a century ago. Interesting visits include the smallest desert in the world, Carcross Desert, Emerald (Rainbow) Lake and the seaport of Skagway, an old Gold Rush town. A sensational train ride over the infamous White Pass should not be missed.

Day 10

KLUANES NATIONAL PARK

Today’s journey will lead you towards Haines Junction, which neighbours the glorious Kluane National Park. This is the largest national park in Canada, with large tracts of the park still untouched and unexplored. In addition to an array of wildlife, you will find the largest glacier area outside of the North and South Poles.

Day 11

TOK

Drive along the shores of the vast and vastly scenic Lake Kluane. At the Sheep Mountain Visitor Centre you can spot the scarce snow-white dall sheep grazing on the surrounding mountains, and in Tok you can observe a sled dog demonstration.

Day 12

VALDEZ

Your destination may be the seaport town of Valdez, but your route is just as impressive. The tour takes you along the Glenn Highway through panoramic landscapes of grand calving glaciers, still lakes and picturesque rivers – all the way to Wrangell-St Elias National Park. Then comes the Richardson Highway to the Pacific Coast and Valdez itself, dubbed ‘little Switzerland’ by the locals thanks to its gorgeous alpine surroundings.

Day 13

SEWARD

The ferry across Prince William Sound is an unforgettable trip. You can expect to see wildlife like whales, sea lions, otters and an abundance of puffins. But perhaps the most impressive sight will be the mighty calving icebergs, such as the spectacular Columbia Glacier and Portage Glacier, which send great slabs of ice crashing into the freezing waters.

Day 14-16

SEWARD – ANCHORAGE – REYKJAVIK – LONDON

Your final day is spent in Anchorage. There are plenty of things to do, see and experience here in Alaska’s biggest city, including the largest marine airport, microbreweries and numerous museums and shops. Come nightfall, you can enjoy a special dinner at ‘Gwennies’, a restaurant known for its steaks.
The following day you will travel to the airport for your return flight home.
