STEEPED IN HISTORY
One of Quebec’s most imposing edifices. Architecture in the grand manner. A fascinating collection of villas, stately inns and private homes. Surrounded by glorious parks and meandering rivers.
Drive along Highway 362 towards La Malbaie, and you will not be disappointed. The road’s unassuming official title doesn’t inspire much hope of great scenery, but its nickname hints at what is in store. Known as the River Route, this road twists and turns through the magnificent Charlevoix region, following the meanderings of picturesque waterways and dense forests. Your destination is hardly less delightful.
La Malbaie is a huge pile executed in true French style, with high ornate gables, rounded spires, green roofs and an imposing façade. Small wonder the place has long been a mecca for the rich and famous – including William Howard Taft, former President of the United States of America. Today you can stroll along the Chemin des Falaises, taking in its stately villas, private homes and inviting inns. Or, if you’re feeling more adventurous, you can explore the nearby parks and riversides, or go hiking, kayaking, cycling or fishing.
