The view across Bagan’s temple-strewn landscape is one of the most captivating sights in Southeast Asia. Perched on the banks of the Irrawaddy River in central Myanmar, this ancient city is dotted with thousands of atmospheric pagodas and intricate stupas.
Bagan’s jaw-dropping collection of Buddhist monuments is considered by many to be on a par with Cambodia’s Angkor Wat. Rising high above the trees, many of the temples were constructed during the height of the Burmese Kingdom between the 11th and 13th centuries, with over 2,000 of the originals still standing today.
