Chiang Mai and the surrounds

an ancient Kingdom circled by lush countryside

The ancient Kingdom of Chiang Mai, circled by lush countryside, is a welcome change of pace from the busy streets of Bangkok. A region made for leisurely exploration, you can spend days immersing yourself in its culture, arts and crafts, temples, palaces and historic atmosphere.

Start your exploration in the walled old city to discover traditional wooden houses and intricately decorated temples such as the 13th century Wat Chiang Man. A highlight here is the night market – the perfect opportunity to brush up on your bargaining skills. This dazzling bazaar is lined with stalls that sell everything from lacquered boxes to parchment parasols, as well as goods brought down by local hill tribe traders.

There are some 300 temples to discover in and around Chiang Mai, but don’t miss out on the Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, a magnificent gilded temple considered the most sacred in the region. Thanks to its convenient location on a hilltop it also boasts superb views over the city.

Thailand is known for its delectable cuisine, and the north is no exception. Why not learn the ins and outs of Thai cookery with a local family who will teach you how to prepare authentic and delicious recipes you can take home with you.

Beyond Chiang Mai lies the enchanting countryside of northern Thailand, a captivating region dotted with minority hill tribe villages, exquisite Buddhist temples, hot springs and waterfalls. If you have time, head to the historic cities of Phrae and Lampang to discover some superb examples of traditional teak architecture.
