North Island, Seychelles

The previously uninhabited 500-acre North Island has been transformed into an unspoilt haven of peace and tranquillity for both the most discerning traveller and the critically endangered indigenous wildlife of the Seychelles.

An escapist paradise encircled by white coral sand and aquamarine seas, the island's exclusive, multi-award winning, eco-friendly lodge consists of just 11 sea-facing villas all offering unparalleled privacy and luxury - an air-conditioned master bedroom, separate dressing area, a bathroom with marble bath plus indoor and outdoor shower, a lounge/dining area with adjoining kitchenette and a second air-conditioned bedroom/study. Made out of timber, stone and palm leaves and then finished with glass, each completely self-contained villa is a showcase of ethnic craftsmanship. An expansive sundeck, private plunge pool and covered 'sala' complete your private sanctuary within a sanctuary.

Activities include swimming and sunbathing on any of the four private beaches, scuba diving, snorkelling, sea kayaking, mountain biking, fly-fishing, boating and island hopping. Guests are able to explore North Island itself on foot plus neighbouring Silhouette Island offers some challenging and hiking trails. The island's resident ecologist runs a breeding programme for the highly endangered Seychelles giant tortoises and terrapin and, depending on the time of year, you may see turtle eggs being incubated.

Located above the main 45-metre pool, hewn out of granite rock and overlooking the clear azure ocean, is the North Island Spa. Therapists will develop your own individual programme which can be carried out either in the Spa itself or in the privacy of your villa. A short distance away from the Spa is an air-conditioned gym. A library and lounge area combine a high degree of comfort with unforgettable views of the sea and mountains.

You can choose to dine in your villa or join other guests for a drink in the Sunset Bar on the northern end of Grande Anse Beach before sampling Creole inspired dishes in the main restaurant area. The island's chef meets each guest upon arrival, discusses their food preferences, and then develops daily menus around that information. An impressive cellar containing some of the world's greatest wines and champagnes provides the finishing touch to what has to be the definitive 'barefoot luxury' experience.

  • What was particularly impressive was the way in which Catherine listened to what we like to do and combined all of this in a destination we would not have considered - a truly terrific effort.
