You can hear the roar from miles away and, as you draw closer, the billowing mist gives you the impression of a vast, ceaseless explosion in a massive gorge. Then you come to the edge of the mighty Victoria Falls…
A curtain of water, over a mile wide. Over 550,000 cubic metres of it, falling over 90 metres, every minute. The figures are staggering. But in no way do they prepare you for the awesome majesty of the Falls themselves. Hypnotic in their motion. Terrifying in their force. Humbling in their sheer size. The Victoria Falls are reason enough to take a luxury, tailor-made holiday to Zimbabwe.
But not the only reason to visit this diverse, beautiful land.
Talk to Tania Buhlmann, our leading consultant on Zimbabwe, and she’ll tell you about national parks – like Hwange; renowned for its game viewing – that cover a total of 18,000 sq miles. Expert local guides will show you elephants, lions, leopard, eland and sable. They have the knowledge and skill to point out many of the 500 species of birds, over 115 different reptiles and almost innumerable amphibians and fish. In fact, it is the guides that make Zimbabwe’s wildlife so accessible.
So you could even take a walk on the wild side, with a lion at your side! Or try tiger fishing and canoeing in Mana Pools. Or – if cats aren’t your thing – go birding beside Lake Kariba in the Matusadona National Park.
Zimbabwe is very definitely back on the list of must-visits.
