Bangkok’s Riverside Legend
There are newer hotels in Bangkok, but few can match the sense of history, occasion and unmistakable character of Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok. Across the water, Baan Phraya serves refined Thai cuisine within a restored heritage residence. Afternoon tea in The Authors’ Lounge remains a Bangkok institution, and evenings at The Bamboo Bar are accompanied by cocktails and live jazz.
When the heat and energy of the city become too much, retreat to the swimming pool or take the hotel’s boat across the river to The Oriental Spa. Set within a traditional Thai residence, the spa offers treatments inspired by Asian healing traditions, alongside an extensive wellness centre with yoga, Muay Thai, tennis and modern fitness facilities.
The riverside location is part of the experience. Private shuttle boats connect guests with the hotel’s spa and Thai restaurants, Saphan Taksin Skytrain station and ICONSIAM, while many of Bangkok’s temples, palaces and historic neighbourhoods can be reached by travelling along the Chao Phraya itself.
Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok is best suited to travellers who value heritage, gracious service and a genuine sense of place. Its style is more classical than some of the capital’s newer hotels, but for atmosphere, history and old-school Thai hospitality, it remains one of Bangkok’s defining places to stay.
