BOTSWANA GUIDED CYCLING SAFARI

This trailblazing safari invites a small group of adventurous cyclists to explore the ancient elephant paths that have shaped Botswana’s enchanting landscape.
BOTSWANA, AFRICA

ABOUT THE ITINERARY

A unique opportunity to see the Okavango Delta from a different perspective – in the footsteps of the elephants that have forged their way around the region for centuries.

With two professional cycling safari guides, your group will cover between 40-70km of animal trails and jeep tracks per day, taking in a beautiful procession of acacia woodlands, wandering river banks, mopane forests and savannah grasslands. You’ll observe wonderful wildlife as you go, and enjoy all those classic Delta experiences – game drives, mokoro excursions, boat safaris…

You’ll stay in comfortable mobile campsites, and end with two nights at the stylish Little Sable in the heart of the Khwai Private Reserve.

Day 1-2

MAUN – MOREMI GAME RESERVE

Arriving in Maun, you will be met by your safari guide who will help load your bike and luggage before driving you 1.5 hours to your first mobile safari camp. Just south of the Moremi Game Reserve, here you can rest after your journey and refuel with a delicious dinner around a crackling campfire.

The next day, following a sunrise wakeup call and a light breakfast, your cycling safari begins. Elephants are natural trail builders, and you’ll follow their paths through pretty woodlands, plains and mopane forests, stopping along the way for wildlife spotting and refreshments. After 5-6 hours of riding, you’ll be back at camp in time for lunch and a well-earned siesta. After a morning in the saddle, your afternoon consists of a game drive with sundowners, followed by a relaxed evening around the fire.

Day 3-4

KHWAI RIVER

Today you’ll pack your bags and begin the 5-6 hour ride to your next campsite spot, following scenic elephant trails and jeep tracks along the meandering Khwai River. Your ride will be broken up by lunch, at which point you’ll have the option to get in a safari vehicle with your bike for a drive into camp. The campsite itself has a charming riverside location – the perfect setting to enjoy a sundowner and hearty dinner before bed.

On day four, you’ll continue tracking the footsteps of Botswana’s gentle giants, this time through wide open plains and mopane forest. As you go, keep an eye out for sightings of elephant, buffalo, giraffe and even lion. After this adventurous 6-7 hour ride, you’ll return to camp for a lazy lunch and afternoon in the shade of the mopane trees.

Day 5-6

KHWAI PRIVATE RESERVE

Today you’ll pack up once more and drive north into the Khwai Private Reserve, enjoying a picnic lunch en route. As well as boasting the most enchanting scenery – picture clusters of mopane trees, lush riverine forest and floodplains dotted with pretty waterholes – the reserve is known for hiding some of Botswana’s rarer species, including wild dogs, serval cats, honey badgers and the elusive pangolin.

You’ll be staying at the heart of this pristine, 200,000-hectare wilderness at Little Sable, a stylish little camp made up of just eight traditional tents with private viewing decks. From here you can venture out on exciting game drives, traditional mokoro excursions and enchanting boat safaris.

For a little more excitement, you can swap one of your nights at Little Sable for a magical, under-the-stars sleep out in one of Natural Selection’s ‘Skybeds’. Overlooking a busy waterhole, you’ll have nothing but a mosquito net between you and the stars.
