Botswana
If you were only ever to visit one country in Africa, Botswana would be the wise choice. Its variety of habitats, wildlife and scenery make it a whole continent within a country.
Botswana is roughly the size of France, yet over 40% of it is protected and conserved for wildlife. So it is astonishingly rich in game and wonderfully diverse.
You can explore the wetlands of the Okavango Delta by traditional Mokoro canoe and see a wealth of game and exotic birds. You can fly over the flooded delta in a small plane or helicopter, or splash through the shallows on horseback, alongside giraffe. You can stay on Chief’s Island and experience some of the best game viewing in Africa (top tip: you may not need a long lens, and bring a camera with plenty of memory).
Or you can roam the arid plains of the Kalahari Desert or sit beside inquisitive meercats in Makgadikgadi Pans – formed by a shift in the Earth’s crust and the setting for the evolutionary birthplace of modern mankind.
With so much on offer, it’s best to consult an enthusiastic expert. Tania Perkins tailor-makes itineraries that include the little known zebra migration of Central Kalahari, the Victoria Falls and mobile tented safaris designed to bring you close to nature.
