You’re unlikely to spot reindeer, but take a Christmas Safari to Kenya and you will see great herds of elephants roaming across the Masai Mara.
You’ll be able to watch prides of lion, wild dogs, cheetahs, giraffe, zebra, leopards and – in a private conservancy at Laikipia – large numbers of black rhino and chimpanzees. You could even buy the family a hot air balloon flight, for Christmas.
Fly to Nairobi to begin your festive adventure.
Stay: One night in Nairobi.
Day 2: Nairobi – Laikipia
Take a flight in a light aircraft to the Ol Pejeta Conservancy at Laikipia.
Day 3 – 4: The Ol Pejeta Conservancy gives you the opportunity to see Kenya’s largest population of the rare black rhino, as well as a huge range of plains game. You can also visit a chimpanzee sanctuary to meet one of man’s closest relatives, face-to-face. Meanwhile day and night time game drives in purpose-designed safari vehicles, plus bush walks with specialist guides are natural highlights for wildlife watching. But the adventure doesn’t stop there; you can also go mountain biking and exploring the Dam by canoe.
Stay: Three nights in Kicheche Laikipia
Day 5: Laikipia – Masai Mara
Your next hop by light aircraft is to the Masai Mara and the Mara North Conservancy.
Day 6 – 8: Masai Mara
When you touch down in the Masai Mara you have arrived in one of the world’s most renowned regions for watching big game. Elephants, giraffe, zebra, rhino and wild dogs rub shoulders – a little uneasily – with big cats like lion, cheetah and even leopards. Experienced guides will take you on both day and night game drives, so you don’t miss any of the action. But you can also observe the smaller game on guided bush walks, and immerse yourself in the local culture with trips to nearby villages. Overnight fly camping, deep in the bush, is an option and for the ultimate Christmas present you can treat your nearest and dearest to a sunrise hot air balloon flight over Africa’s great plains.
Stay: Four nights in Kicheche Mara Camp.
Masai Mara – Nairobi
